How can you know…

Whether dyslexia is the problem?

Dyslexia runs in families, but can be mild in one person and severe in another, even in the same family.

Not all individuals with dyslexia have all of the symptoms, but if three or more signs apply, suspect dyslexia.

Warning Signs of Dyslexia in Preschool:

  • Late in learning to talk
  • Chronic ear infections
  • Left vs. right confusion
  • Mixing up sounds in long words
  • Trouble rhyming words
  • Trouble remembering the alphabet

Warning Signs of Dyslexia in School:

  • Slow, choppy, inaccurate reading
  • Messy handwriting
  • Terrible spelling
  • Poor memory for words
  • Difficulty telling time on a clock with hands
  • Disorganized room and belongings
  • Trouble with math calculations
  • Difficulty learning foreign language
  • Poor writing expression despite good oral skills
  • Difficulty reading printed music
  • At-risk for dropping out

Warning Signs of Dyslexia In Adults

Education history similar to above, plus:

  • Slow reader
  • May have to read a page 2 or 3 times to understand it
  • Terrible speller
  • Difficulty putting thoughts onto paper
  • Dreads writing memos or letters
  • Still has difficulty with right versus left
  • Often gets lost, even in a familiar city
  • Sometimes confused b and d, especially when tired or sick
